Natural Cleaning Solution

Lavender-oil

We may clean and scrub, polish and dust until floors, surfaces and windows sparkle and shine. But what are you cleaning with? If you’re leaving behind a chemical haze, what have you achieved? Many cleaning products are responsible for triggering allergic reactions and exacerbating migraines and asthma symptoms. Reading labels is just as important on your household cleaners as on the food you eat.

Making simple and inexpensive house cleaners from natural products is easy. I use this solution for just about every surface in my house. From the kitchen countertops to the bathroom, every area of the home smells wonderful and sparkles. As a base I use washing soda crystals. Before the advent of modern cleaning products, washing soda crystals were the main product used for both household cleaning and laundry.

What you require:

  • 2 teaspoons washing soda crystals
  • Hot water
  • 4 tablespoons white vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon natural unscented liquid soap
  • ¼ teaspoon tea tree oil
  • 10 drops rosemary oil
  • 10 drops wild orange oil
  • 10 drops lavender oil

Dissolve the washing soda into 2 cups of very hot water, strain the mixture through a very fine strainer and funnel it into a bottle. Add the rest of the ingredients and shake to blend. Top off with more hot water and shake again.

The oils:

Rosemary, tangerine and lavender can be found in most natural foods stores and can also be omitted or replaced with other oils depending on your likes and dislikes in aromas. Rosemary’s natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties make it a great addition to homemade household cleaner. The rosemary oil aids in disinfecting but the others are more for fragrance. If you prefer, you can leave out the oils and create an unscented version of this cleaner. Wild orange not only has a happy scent, but, like lemon, it’s great against grease. Lavender oil is one of the wonderful scented naturally antibacterial essential oils. pairs well with the other common natural cleaner in this solution, vinegar.

Let’s make the world a cleaner place by using only natural ingredients.
